Chapter Eight

Trixie had not slept well. Her dreams had constantly woken her—dreams about androids, nightmares of alien creatures, and prisoners in revolt. Several times her human android had appeared. Beautiful, sexy Jem, built like a bodybuilder, causing her to wake bathed in perspiration, wishing he was in bed with her.

She’d been dead-tired when they got back from their excursion, and he must have been as well. He had resumed his position as her guard outside her door. She could not imagine sleeping while standing up. This undercover business demanded a lot of sacrifices, though he could have slept in her room. She’d offered several times, but he said he needed to show himself standing guard or he would arouse suspicion.

Swinging her legs over the side of the bed, she got up. It was almost ten. She’d only had five hours of sleep and had missed breakfast. Damn. She hurried to the door and opened it, peeking through the crack. “Jem?”

“Sixty,” he hissed, as much as his metallic voice allowed him to hiss.

“Come on in.” She quickly closed the door.

“Thank the gods. My bladder is bursting at the seams.” He hurried into her bathroom.

“Jeepers, you could have snuck in while I was sleeping,” she muttered. “Thankfully, there’s still the snacks I took from the party.” She ate a few of them, stilling her hunger pangs.

He came out of the bathroom, wearing only the towel, and grimaced. “Good thing you brought food back with you last night.” He devoured some of the cold delicacies.

“Jem, now that I’ve remembered some of the magic, and can make us invisible, do we have any plans for today? I can’t imagine sitting in this room for the rest of the day. What do the inmates in this building do on their day off?”

He shrugged. “I have no idea. Read?”

“We could go to Bradbury’s house and spy on him. Maybe we’ll hear something,” she suggested.

“We could. Or... we could just stay here and talk. I’d like to learn more about you. Like, what made you decide to go to the academy and become an agent?”

She searched her memory. Ana had mentioned it in her diary, but there was so much information, it was hard to remember all of it. Right. Murder. “My whole family was murdered, and they never found the killer.”

“I’m sorry. So you have no one.”

“My mother,” she answered absently, without thinking.

“You just said your family was murdered. Your mother survived?”

Oh hell. “My friend’s mother. She took me in after it happened.” The lies... If she wanted to get to know him better as well, those lies could come back to bite her in the butt.

“You survived. What happened? Did you witness it? How old were you?”

“I was at my girlfriend’s house, and I was eight. All I know is that they were all killed in cold blood, my parents and two brothers and a sister. I’ve yet to find out more details. The file is highly classified.”

“Have you asked Craig?”

“Yes, but even he can’t open the file.
